Developing courses in floodplain and flood risk management

(Development Partnerships in Higher Education (DelPHE) – British Council supported, 2007-2009)

A grant to Cantho University, FHRC and Independent University Bangladesh from the UK Department for International Development’s Development Partnerships in Higher Education project (administered by British Council) supported exchange visits to develop and initiate short courses and MSc modules in Vietnam and Bangladesh during 2007-2009.

The project developed and operated two short courses and a diploma course in Vietnam, and five different short courses in Bangladesh. These were taught by faculty of all three partner universities. Through these courses in Bangladesh the capacity of 51 professionals and community leaders and 21 faculty of partner and other universities was enhanced. In Vietnam, the capacity of 45 provincial staff in the Mekong Delta was enhanced.

Through the project CTU and IUB have both developed and received official approval to conduct new MSc streams/specializations.

In CanTho University, Vietnam there is now the MSc in Environmental Management with three specializations including: i) Environmental Management for Urban and Industrial Zone; ii) Environmental Management for coastal zone; and iii) Environmental Management for Flooded Areas.  Students will choose two among 3 specializations.

In Bangladesh at IUB there is now the MSc in Natural Resources and Disaster Management, this is a new course approved by the University Grants Commission in July 2009 and the first batch started in January 2010. The component courses developed through this DelPHE project form a stream in Floodplain and Disaster Management.
